FG calls for mandatory encryption of sensitive, personal data carried portably
The news this evening (Wednesday) that a laptop containing sensitive bank data of 75,000 Bord Gáis customers has been stolen is the latest in a long list of fiascos that must result in all sensitive customer data being encrypted, Fine Gael Communications Spokesman, Simon Coveney TD has said.
“Another day, another stolen laptop, another fiasco when it comes to personal data.
“The news that four Bord Gáis laptops were stolen 12 days ago - one of which contained sensitive bank details of 75,000 customers and was not encrypted – once again highlights the need for immediate action in the area of data protection
“Consumers need greater protection and Fine Gael wants to strengthen the Data Commissioners’ hand by introducing mandatory encryption of all sensitive personal data carried portably. This obligation should have been brought into force years ago but, in just four days, we have seen the dire need for it.
“If the theft of fifteen HSE computers in Roscommon isn’t enough to spur the Government into action on the issue of personal data security then maybe the fact that 75,000 Bord Gáis have now seen their sensitive bank data compromised must force the Minister’s hand.”
